1967 Gibson LG1 in Cherry Sunburst. Has numerous cracks and regular ageing on its varnish finish with its lovely golden hue. Also has some scratches & chips on the Spruce top and Mahogany back and sides with a few very minor wear & tear scuffs to neck and headstock, most of which you would expect to see in a well used guitar of this age. There is a re-finish chip on the neck at fret 13 & all can be seen in pics. All marks are merely superficial, more reminiscent of being slightly neglected for a short period of her 43 year life, but not whilst I’ve owned her. However, she is structurally extremely sound. This guitar has been checked out by a professional luthier & is 100% structually sound.
Professionally set-up in November 2009 with Martin 11’s, plays extremely well, stays in tune & produces wonderful tones. Despite a lack in bass response that you would get with a J45 or similar, she has fabulous balance across all 6 strings, especially when played fingerpicking style more than anything else. She exudes an altogether brighter & punchier sound with more attack because of the spruce top.
What I also like about this character filled baby over any other LG1 I have seen, is that she features an upgraded replacement Gibson reverse style Rosewood bridge. Original LG1's of this period had adjustable plastic bridges.
She has a lovely well aged Cherry Sunburst finish and a replacement tortoloid tear drop scratch plate, as the original bat wing scratch plate must of gone a long time ago because there is a very feint outline of a bat wing with the colour match on the top being the same as where the plate was, giving this guitar a unique feature. Old fibre hard case is included, but I don't think it’s original.
Aside from the pick-guard & bridge she's all-original, except for a probable re-fret at the same time as the bridge replacement, although I have no idea when this occurred.
Plays and sounds brilliant with a terric low action with a neck that is straight & true.
These are the comments from the Luthier as follows: "The checking is perfectly normal and is to be expected for a Gibson this old and will not become problematic. The neck is absolutely fine. The action is very nice and low following the bridge shave in November 09 (when set-up) There is extremely minor bellying behind the bridge, really only noticeable to the trained eye, but this is far far less than most examples of this age & poses absolutely no issue whatsoever. Apart from the obvious dings, it is a very healthy vintage piece with no directional grain cracks and is structurally great"
