Really nice example of a Kay K-1B short scale 30". Made in Taiwan factory around 1969. There are a couple of pics of the neck and body socket stamps which seem to read 12/8/69 . The finish is a lovely cherry red mahogany colour although the body is laminate and not solid wood. The neck is made of a nice quality hard wood with a true straight line with it's adjustable reinforced rod. The enclosed chromed machine heads are well made with good gearing. The fretboard has a zero fret and inlaid position markers. Hardly any fretwear showing. The chromed pickup is very good output and these are very desirable vintage replacements and sort after for people who want them as extras on more modern instruments. The pickguard a nice clear 'K' emblem in gold ( these are often rubbed off with time and tide) shines out next to the finger rest. The two controls are volume & tone with again original items. The fully adjustable bridge and tailpiece has a replacement cover (non original) and it can be easily removed for access to string adjustment and replacement or if you prefer left off totally. I have had a few of these in the past and only one had the original cover ( rare as dragons teeth!).
The playability and sound of this is fantastic and a budding Jack Bruce who can't afford the real thing wouldn't be dissapointed with the action ,intonation, ease of fingerboard/neck and of course tone quality. I actually own a EB3L Slot head and the sound when put side by side is , dare I say pretty close to the real thing.
This is a collectable and playable bass and if your name happens to be 'Kay' all the better ( you won't need to label your instrument incase it gets mixed up with other peoples!)
