This is a very rare Starfield America Cabriolet SJ Limited CBL620 in ST.Green with Birdseye maple top over a semi hollow mahogany back. These guitars were used for a while by Joe Satriani & Steve Vai, that speaks volumes and some of the reasons follow-
Made in '92. 22 frets. It's got a mahagony body with a very nice flamed maple top. Not as thick as a LP, but also not as heavy. One piece bolt on maple neck with the so-called all-access neck joint that gives me an upper fret access as good as on my SG. Fretboard is made of ebony. The very thin neck is not painted, that gives a very nice feeling. This neck is fast (6105 frets, PRS scale)! Wilkinson string through bridge, smooth Gotoh tuners. H/H pickups: Seymour Duncan SH-1 in neck position, TB-5 at the bridge. 1 Voume, 1 Tone, 5 way switch with unusual wiring(neck pu coils in series - neck pu coils in parallel - both parallel - bridge parallel - bridge series). Many nice details like the 100% shielded cavity. Whereever you look: every detail was designed with care and everything is of high quality and shows it was built with care. So over all I can't but give it a 10.
This is a very versatile guitar. It can cover anything from clean to blues to shred very convincing. The guitar has a lot of sustain. The sound is a bit like a Les Paul with coils in series, but with much more sparkle and top end. Solid bass. High gain sounds have much clarity and punch. But then there's still the parallel coils option. I actually prefer this sound to the splitted humbucker sound. You'll get a quieter and thinner sound than while running the coils in series. That's great for rhythm sounds. For solos just use the coils in series to get a louder, richer sound.
Due to the shielding there's no noise.
Only thing I sometimes wish was it was a bit more meaty and chunky for leads. But on the other hand the guitar would loose some of the sparkle then...
That's maybe the problem: it has not got such a defined character as a LP or a Strat, but it covers much more ground than those. I love that I got so many quality sounds on hand with just one guitar! It excels at High Gain and Clean, for Rock/Blues I normally like darker guitars. The rock/blues tones are very useable though.
Finish and fretwork is flawless. Pickup height isn't easily adjustable, fortunately the height is setup quite good by factory. No flaws at all exept the chrome of the bridge is starting to come of in some spots. But I think that's pretty normal after 10+ years of use. I had to tweak the wiring a bit though: Rolling down the volume pot robbed treble, but after I installed a 250nF cap across the pot it works fine.
Best thing is the comfort: you can play for hours without getting tired, action is low, no fret buzz, guitar is well balanced and has a nicely contoured body. Finish looks like new, no wear at all.
